Details of Experience:

Rose is an 84-year-old female with a history of hypertension, diabetes, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Rose came to The Willows at Ramapo with a diagnosis of shortness of breath on 09/26/2017 from Good Samaritan Hospital.

She has progressively worsening renal insufficiencies, which lead to her episodes of shortness of breath. She currently visits a local dialysis center for treatment for renal disease. When Rose arrived to The Willows, she was on continuous supplemental oxygen for her shortness of breath and low oxygen saturation. Additionally, she has been using a BIPAP at hour of sleep to eliminate excess carbon dioxide. Rose has progressed significantly in therapy. Her ultimate plan is to return back home to her family.

To help achieve Rose’s goals, she has been working weekly with the therapists in the Rehabilitation Department. One of the primary goals in therapy was to wean her off from the supplemental oxygen. The respiratory therapist along with the physical and occupational therapists are all assisting to achieve that goal through monitoring her vitals, exercises, breathing techniques, and education.

Rose is currently on room air during all walking hours and is no longer in need of supplemental oxygen to maintain safe oxygen levels! Rose has also been working with the interdisciplinary team to help her prepare physically for her safe return home. Therapy has been working greatly towards helping her become as independent as possible throughout her daily routine. She has made great strides with ambulation, upper body strength, and exercise tolerance. When she returns home she will primarily use a rolling walker to ambulate throughout the day and her daily routine. She will be returning home to live with her family. Our team will provide the family education and advice as days get closer to her discharge to help transition her for the return home. Rose has strong family support to support her while home. We all wish her a successful safe return home!
