How did this patient hear about The Riverside? Hospital Social worker

Details of experience:
Mr. Troy was admitted to The Riverside Premier Rehabilitation and Healing Center from NYU Medical Center on December 24th, 2018. Mr. Troy has a history of multiple surgeries in his arm and hand. At the age of 18, Mr. Troy worked on the assembly line as a welder for car doors. He truly loved working at the factory which he considered a second home.

As a result of working on the assembly line Mr. Troy, had multiple injuries, particularly in his hands, arm, and right hip. With having to move heavy pieces of equipment, this caused muscles to tear and bones to be damaged and broken. With all the damage he sustained while working, he decided to have surgery done on his hands and arms in hopes of finding work in a factory. After receiving surgery, he was able to briefly return to work.

With time, his doctors informed him that he will need the right hip replacement surgery. He agreed with his doctors and had the surgery on the December, 20th, 2018. A successful surgery was completed, and the team at NYU believed Mr. Troy should continue with therapy. They recommended that Mr. Troy should consider going to a skilled nursing community. The hospital social worker arrived with a list of different communities. Being a very thorough individual and conducting his own research, Mr. Troy informed the hospital social worker of his decision.

Upon arrival The Riverside, Mr. Troy was greeted with open arms by the staff members on the 14th floor. Each department sent representatives to greet Mr. Troy, answering his questions, and concerns. Our concierge greeted him with a welcome booklet and a welcome gift. The concierge assured him that any issues or concerns will be handled quickly and efficiently. With a smile on his face, he said, “The healing starts now.” As the physical therapist and occupational therapist met with Mr. Troy, a plan was customized to his specific needs.

At the start of his journey to recovery, Mr. Troy was only able to walk 20 feet with contact guard assist and was rated 3/5 for strength in his lower body. With pain and weakness in his lower body, the medical staff at The Riverside consulted with a pain management doctor.

After a few days, Mr. Troy was able to begin standing with no pain and began transferring from the wheelchair to the walker with little assistance. Every day he returned to his room exhausted, and grateful to the staff members that cheered for him every step of the way. On January 28th, 2019 Mr. Troy was discharged from the Riverside. He was able to walk 300 feet with no assistance, 5 out of 5 in lower body strength, and did not need to use a walker anymore. His goal was to leave the Riverside without needing a walker, rather he wanted to leave with a cane. He made his farewell address to the staff members and thanking each of them for all they have done for him. Best of luck Mr. Troy!
