Charles Burton is a 78-year-old, who served four years in the Navy on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Mr. Burton arrived at Bethany Center on March 16, from the VA Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He was admitted to the hospital due to having a seizure, which resulted in losing his ability to walk. He was referred to Bethany Center to undergo both Physical and Occupation therapy.

Mr. Burton arrived Saturday morning and was greeted by our Bethany Center weekend team. First thing Monday morning, he was then greeted by our administrative staff, therapy, and many others to ensure his stay has been satisfying thus far. During this time, he was informed of what to expect from our therapy team and the treatment plan that he will be undergoing. He also attended his care plan meeting where they discussed his progress and the goals that they had set for him. In this meeting, Mr. Burton stated that he hoped to get strong enough to walk up and down the steps when discharged home.

His two week anticipated goals were to perform bed mobility, perform sit-to-stand with a rolling walker and stand by assisting consistently and to ambulate for 50 ft using rolling walker & contact guard assist. Mr. Burton has made tremendous progress and is eager to reach those goals. He noted to have a tremor on his right side and has been working with OT, participating in therapies working on learning to grab a cup. His standing also has improved. PT has been assisting with single leg stands to help with wobbling and to help him learn to use a cane in place of a walker. Also included were standing activities, squats, and strengthening exercises. Mr. Burton has been a great participant and often asks to have therapy when he misses a session due to attending doctor’s appointments.

Mr. Burton is in hopes of discharging home before or on his 21st day. His six months expected outcomes were to function at home with a walker or wheelchair without falls and to be supervised by family. At this time, he is only in his 10th day of treatment and has made amazing progress. He accomplished his goal of taking 15 steps and walking up and down the stairs. Despite the fact of his ongoing chemotherapy treatment, his will and determination have touched us all. We are hoping to get Mr. Burton at a level where all his goals are accomplished. He is determined and is a pleasure to work with. We wish you the best on this journey; keep up the great work. You are doing amazing!
