Details of Experience:
Mr. Kevin T. was admitted to Glengariff on February 2nd, 2021. Prior to being admitted to Glengariff, he was admitted to the Glen Cove Hospital, due to the fact that he could not walk, having undergone a left knee arthroplasty. At the acute rehab service at the hospital, they recommended subacute, short-term rehabilitation. Mr. Lynch and his family and friends, with whom he lives, were informed by the staff about Glengariff and our reputation for rehabilitation.

When Kevin arrived at Glengariff, his family was concerned about his lack of balance, mobility, and strength. His wife knew she was to be his caregiver, but she was concerned about his ability to manage the five stairs to their home and negotiate their tub shower. Kevin was not able to walk by himself, and he did not know if he would be able to do so for more than five steps. Further complicating Kevin’s health picture was the aortic aneurysm that he had sustained, which further weakened him. He was also a very tall and large framed person, placing strain on the leg joints. A fall in September of 2020 was leading to poor strength and weakened balance. Shortly after arrival, Kevin started to make strides, both figuratively and literally. His strength improved, and his steps increased; from 10 feet distance gait with substantial assistance to 100 feet in less than a week! As the therapy continued, Kevin’s goals were reset again, establishing new benchmarks for him to achieve.

With the staff coming to provide both intensive physical therapy, the Concierge team keeping Kevin emotionally connected with endless humor and attentiveness, and his family making FaceTime calls, Kevin got stronger and abler with each passing day. He was so relieved by this clinical and emotional support, which helped Kevin feel calm. He could now focus on getting better and improving his techniques at maneuvering, sitting up in bed, toileting and bathing.

He could not climb any stairs when he was admitted and was at high risk for falls; but within the first 11 days of his stay, he was mounting and descending five stairs at a clip and walking 200 feet unassisted!! When Kevin was wheeled out on his day of discharge, he rose out of his wheelchair effortlessly and strode over to his car (which was sitting 12 feet away), to greet his family and friends.
Throughout his stay, until his departure before my eyes less than two weeks later, Kevin was pleased with our staff and how they took care of him. In multiple departments, Kevin could still now recall the names of those who had worked with him to advance through his progress toward rehabilitation. “The team was terrific in Physical and Occupational Therapy. They took care of me and did house calls…right in my room!”

After a week of participating in rigorous rehabilitation therapy, Kevin was able to get out of bed on his own with no cues of Supervision and he was so improved in performing the basic activities of daily living that his chart read “Highest Practical Level Achieved”. He had received a grade of 100. His progress was rapid and encouraging. His prognosis to maintain his gains was classified as “Excellent”.

At the point of his discharge on February 15, 2021, Kevin was able to climb five steps with only modest assistance from a handrail and could travel 200 feet continuously without breaks, and could turn in place successfully over 95% of the time. “Had he come home immediately after acute rehabilitation, a fall would have been very likely”, his wife said. Instead, when he arrived at his home, he would be able to climb the stairs at the entrance because of the care and commitment of the team. He had met and surpassed his short-term and long-term goals through hard work and dedication crafted from the bond between the patient and care team at Glengariff.
