Details of Experience:

Ms. Swoape is a 59-year-old female who was originally admitted to Bethany Center in June of 2017 after sustaining a fall out of her Jazzy Chair in Wal-Mart with complaints of right leg pain. She was taken to Southern Hills Emergency Department where X-rays showed a distal femoral fracture. A chest X-ray also showed pulmonary edema. She underwent surgery for an open reduction and internal fixation of the right femur with no complications. She received IV antibiotics and the pulmonary edema was treated and she was then transferred to Bethany Center for therapy.

Upon admission to Bethany, Ms. Swoape was evaluated and treated with occupational, physical, and speech therapy. At the beginning of her therapy, Melinda made steady progress and was moderately motivated to go home. Her pain was well-controlled, and she continued to do her therapy with a smile on her face.

Melinda progressed with her therapy and after her skilled stay was complete, she decided to be discharged home on September 13th, 2017. As noted above, she was readmitted to Bethany on September 25th, 2017. After being home for only six days, Ms. Swoape went back to Southern Hills ED with increasing shortness of breath upon exertion. A chest X-ray indicated patchy infiltrate in the right lower lung field. She was treated accordingly, and the wound team was consulted for wounds on bilateral lower extremities. Plans were made for her to discharge back to Bethany Center where she would receive more therapy and wound care. It was after this hospitalization that Ms. Swoape decided to make Bethany Center her home.

Since she has been here, she has continued to make progress. She can now stand up from her own wheelchair without assistance, pivot and turn to sit on her bed. Daily she is telling staff of her accomplishments and she does so with such extreme happiness and confidence. Not all patients /residents progress at the same speed as some take more time than others, but her results have shown that anybody can make progress if they continue to work diligently. Melinda works hard during her therapy sessions and gives daily reports to those who she knows. She is now able to ambulate with stand-by assist with a rolling walker and the length of her walks changes daily. The pride she takes in her own success is what makes the team at Bethany Center so happy!
