Details of Experience:

After a 10 night stay at the Stonecrest Medical Center, Ms Haynes was admitted to Bethany. She was presented to the emergency department with complaints of shortness of breath and chest pain. Per report from her daughter, she had recently been discharged from St. Thomas Hospital the week prior after a prolonged stay for acute respiratory failure with ventilator support and tracheostomy, as well as having her bicuspid valve replaced with a bovine valve.

Debra has an extensive medical history and upon arriving at Bethany, she was very grateful to still be alive and able to receive physical, occupational and speech therapy. After multiple hospital stays, she had become very weak and also had some challenges with swallowing, and at times being able to find the correct words when carrying on conversations.

Since Ms. Haynes was so determined and thankful to be alive, she was happy to work hard to regain her strength so that she would be able to be as independent as possible upon discharge. Some days were hard for Debra and at times she didn’t feel like doing her therapy. On those days, our therapy staff helped to encourage her to get it done and she always did. Our staff do their best to keep our patients moving in the forward direction so that they reach their goals and get to go home.

Debra also worked with our speech therapists to assist with her linguistic issues. She had trouble organizing her thoughts and being able to find the appropriate verbiage during conversations and would get frustrated. Currently she is communicating much better than she was upon admission and has been working daily so she continues to improve even once she discharges home.

Ms. Haynes states that she is very thankful to have been able to come to Bethany for therapy and is looking forward to being able to go home soon. We here at Bethany will do everything in our power to have Ms. Haynes reach her goals.
