Details of Experience:

Ms. Joan Anderer was admitted to The Grand Pavilion from Hospital for Special Surgery on October 9th, 2017. Ms. Anderer and her devoted husband were participating in a Religious Site touring trip and upon reaching their first destination in Lisbon, Portugal, she experienced a fall. Joan was admitted to the Grand Pavilion with a diagnosis of displaced bicondylar fracture of left tibia, acute embolism and thrombosis of right popliteal vein and generalized muscle weakness. Upon arrival to the Grand Pavilion, Joan was greeted by our Concierge, Nursing Team, Rehab team and Social Worker team.

Prior to Ms. Anderer’s incident in Lisbon, she was running a completely normal independent life and unfortunately in a matter of minutes that had all changed. She was now faced with the challenge of accepting total dependency and the challenges that come with it. Joan was making a strong effort to stay positive and patient. We ensured Joan that we would be holding her hand throughout her journey and that she could be confident in full Rehabilitation. She would attend Catholic Services every Wednesday and ultimately it was Joan’s deep sense of faith and positivity that led her to achieve the rehabilitation that she successfully attained.

Ms. Anderer was non-weight bearing on her left leg, experiencing a decrease in strength on the right leg, an increased risk of falls, impaired functional mobility, reduced balance and required an increased need for caregiver assistance. For her activities of daily living she required max assistance. The goal of Occupational Therapy (OT) was to increase functional activity tolerance, improve motor control and tone in her upper extremities and enhance Joan’s quality of life by improving her ability to perform activities of daily living safely. It was the goal of Physical Therapy (PT) to enhance fall recovery abilities, facilitate increased independence with ambulation/stair negotiation and to increase lower extremities range of motion.

Joan’s highlight of the day was going to the gym for Rehab Services. She found the environment to be young and vibrant. Being that Joan was non-weight bearing she would work with a walker during her Rehab sessions. For example, the physical therapy team would have her hold onto the walker while exercising techniques. Joan made slow and steady progress during time spent in skilled rehab sessions. She initially required max assistance, was walking zero feet and was non-weight bearing on her left leg, but due to her daily participation in therapeutic exercise activities to facilitate increased upper and lower extremity muscle strength at eight weeks into her Rehab services she was 100% weight bearing and walking 100 feet.

With the support of the entire Grand Pavilion team, Joan had reached the point where she was able to safely return home and continue living independently with her devoted and loving husband once again. Team Grand Pavilion was honored for the opportunity to provide her with a safe transition back home.
