How did patient hear about Bethany Center for Rehabilitation and Healing? Case worker with Southern Hills recommendation
Details of Experience:
Gloria was admitted to Southern Hills hospital in the beginning of April 2020 for chest pain, where she stayed for a little over a week. Due to her prolonged hospital stay, she developed weakness in her lower extremities and continued chest pain, which was exacerbated by her preexisting COPD. Doctors recommended assistance from skilled nurses and therapists to complete a full recovery and a return home.
Gloria was admitted to Bethany Center on April 13, 2020. Upon admission, she was unsure of how she would participate in therapy and if she could perform the tasks they were going to ask of her. She was given an initial evaluation along with a set of personalized goals she would need to meet before discharging. She also was given an appointment to meet with the Director of Therapy, as well as her therapist. Following this meeting, she felt more comfortable and reassured, with all her questions answered.
Physical therapy played a big role in Gloria’s rehabilitation journey at Bethany. She quickly became very comfortable and built a rapport with her therapist. The therapist started working on standing with her right away. One of her goals was to be able to stand for 10 minutes or more at a time. Gloria struggled with this task at first, but she did not give up. Within the first week, she was able to stand for 4 minutes at a time.
In between therapy sessions, Gloria was given instructions on how to do a range of motion and small strengthening exercises from the comfort of her bed. After she could prove that she could stand for several minutes, the therapist focused on stairs with her. She has 8 stairs at her home that she will need to be able to walk up. By the end of the second week, Gloria was able to stand for 8 minutes and walk up and down all 8 stairs.
Some of Gloria’s occupational therapy goals included standing at the stove and sink for an extended period of time and ambulating from the bedroom to the kitchen with the walker. She exceeded those goals as well. She explained to me that she is very thankful for everything the therapists and the rest of the Bethany team have done for her. The Bethany team wishes her all the best moving forward!
