Sonya’s medical history was complex. Following chemotherapy, she lost the ability to walk, stand, sit independently, or even reposition herself without assistance. During her stay at her previous facility, she experienced a hallucinogenic dream that caused her to fall from her bed, resulting in a shattered femur, fractured hip, and cracked knee. The experience left her physically and emotionally defeated. She was admitted to Stonecrest Medical Center in October for an unrelated medical issue. During her four-day hospital stay, Sonya made the decision that she would not return to her previous facility. Instead, she chose Bethany, hoping for a fresh start and a chance to regain the independence she had lost. 

When Sonya first arrived at Bethany, she was completely immobile. She could only roll in bed and was experiencing significant pain. She was fully dependent on staff for bathing, dressing, toileting, and transfers. She struggled with fear, uncertainty, and a lack of confidence. 

Her first experience standing again came on November 18, a milestone she will never forget. Although she was frightened, the therapy team encouraged her every step of the way. Through individualized therapy sessions, Sonya worked tirelessly on functional exercises that targeted her greatest challenges. Some days focused entirely on building strength, while others were dedicated to standing, transferring, or relearning functional movements. Progress came one step at a time. As the weeks passed, something remarkable began to happen. Sonya started trusting both the process and the people guiding her through it. The encouragement she received from therapists Eric and Jonathan helped replace her fear with confidence. They continually reminded her that she was capable, even during moments when she doubted herself. Their belief in her became the foundation that allowed her to believe in herself again. 

Today, Sonya’s progress is nothing short of amazing. She has gone from being completely immobile to getting out of bed on her own, taking steps independently, and getting in and out of a car. After a 20-month journey, she is amazed by how far she has come and how close she is to reaching her ultimate goal of returning home. When asked about her experience, Sonya describes it as “magical.” She never imagined she would be walking again after being told she would spend the rest of her life confined to a bed. 

She credits the entire therapy department for treating her with kindness, genuinely caring about her success, and never giving up on her. Despite her fear and anxiety, Sonya never refused therapy. She showed up each day determined to work, trusting that every exercise brought her one step closer to independence. Her therapists describe Sonya as incredibly resilient. 

Despite her extensive medical history and numerous setbacks, she never stopped fighting. She started from scratch and, through perseverance, consistency, and unwavering determination, transformed what once seemed impossible into reality. 

Sonya’s journey is a testament to the power of compassionate care, expert rehabilitation, and believing in yourself—even when the road ahead feels uncertain. While she continues working toward her final goals, her story serves as an inspiration to everyone around her. She has already accomplished what many believed she never could, and with continued determination, there is no doubt she will continue moving forward. We wish Sonya the best as she is preparing to be discharged in the next two weeks. We know that she will continue to thrive within her healing journey!
