Details of Experience:

Denise Lee is a 59-year-old female admitted to Bethany on 7/13/17 due to an acute CVA. She spent 30 days in the hospital prior to admission to Bethany’s skilled rehabilitation unit. She presented to us with weakness, aphasia, complications with diabetes mellitus, resolved seizures and impaired mobility.

Upon admission, Ms. Lee’s speech was more of what is called “word salad”, and had an extremely difficult time communicating. Her use of gestures (head nods) were about 50% accurate with the questions asked during her therapy sessions and at times she became highly agitated and visibly distraught over the inability to be able to communicate effectively. Not only was her struggle with physical abilities, but also with speech, swallowing and the ability to understand those who were communicating with her.

During her stay, her physical progression came much quicker than her speech, cognition and expressive abilities. She was able to walk with contact guard assistance using only the railing on the wall in the hallways along with being able to perform her activities of daily living with little to no assistance from therapy.

Many days Denise would express that she felt that she just couldn’t do her speech therapy exercises because she felt she was never going to be able to do them with 100% accuracy. She was encouraged by our amazing speech therapists to continue working as she made noticeable progress.
Denise was discharged on August 11, 2017! During her stay, she gained much needed strength, physically, and progressed from minimal ability to communicate, to the ability to craft a complete sentence, to the ability of communicating her needs effectively with almost 100% accuracy! She was discharged to a private home and was extremely happy with her care/stay with Bethany Center for Rehabilitation and Healing. Congratulations on your remarkable progress, Denise!
