How did this patient hear about Chatham Hills? Hospital referral, researching the website, case studies and online reviews.

Details of Experience:

Ms. Josephine was presented to the emergency room at Morristown Memorial Hospital with a broken leg. After being admitted to the hospital, she required immediate emergency surgery. The surgery revealed that she had a shattered femur. A rod and pins were surgically placed into her right leg to support her bone structure and facilitate healing.

Prior to discharge from the hospital, Ms. Josephine and her family were provided with a list of subacute facilities to potentially admit to. Her son completed research on the listed facilities. He searched the Chatham Hills community website and enjoyed the photos and list of services and amenities provided at the center. He also enjoyed reading through the testimonials and case studies. He also read the Google reviews about how wonderful the therapy services where at Chatham Hills.

Ms. Josephine was admitted to Chatham Hills on July 5, 2017. She needed maximum assistance for all ADL’s-(Activities of Daily Living). When she arrived, she was unable to ambulate and required increased assistance for functional mobility. Her strength and stamina had weakened and she had depleted range of motion in her leg. Throughout her stay at Chatham Hills, therapists worked with Josephine on therapeutic resistance exercises, she worked on weights and UE-(upper extremity) exercises and progressed from sitting to standing. They also trained her in correct hand/foot placement during gait training with emphasis on negotiating obstacles, increasing safety and performance within the facility, and increasing safety while getting to/from the restroom. They also worked with Josephine on transfer training to increase safe and functional independence.

Upon arrival, Ms. Josephine was not able to walk at all. After participating in therapy six days a week, Josephine is now able to ambulate about 300 feet with a rolling walker. In just about two month’s time, she has a projected discharge date in the first week of September. She is planning to move back home with her sister. She has a very supportive family who is making appropriate accommodations to make the environment safer. As Josephine shared, “Therapy was very good. All therapists were very attentive, focused on my goals of going home. They were all pleasant. They have very positive personalities and they all cared about me. They all knew me by name very quickly, I really felt like I belonged. Despite the severity of my injury, I was still able to get back to walking. I had very little range of motion and now I got back to where I first started. I feel very confident about going back home. They are very efficient with what I need to get back home.”

Ms. Josephine was independent prior to her accident. Her wish when she first arrived to Chatham Hills was to be able to get back to that point. With hard work and determination, we are happy to congratulate her on getting to this point and being able to return home!
