Details of Experience:
Mr. L was admitted to Cortlandt Healthcare for short term rehabilitation resulting from a hospitalization for a cervical spine laminectomy/discectomy and fusion. Mr. L also suffered from pneumonia and an infection of his surgical site.
Mr. L presented with significant neurological weakness of his upper and lower extremities. His ability to swallow was also affected, which resulted in Mr. L having requiring a modified therapeutic diet of pureed foods and nectar thick liquids.
As stated previously, Mr. L presented with a significant functional decline with all mobility. He required a mechanical lift to transfer to and from bed. He was also unable to dress himself and required assistance with his meals.
Since admission, Mr. L has been receiving skilled physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and skilled nursing care seven times a week. Mr. L has made excellent progress with all functional mobility and continues to benefit from further skilled interventions to help him achieve his prior level of functional independence.
Mr. L no longer requires a mechanical lift to transfer to and from bed. He can also manage with the assistance of one support person. He is able to walk 50 feet using a rolling walker with minimal assist of two people. He no longer requires assistance with his meals and has been discharged from speech therapy with an upgrade to a regular diet and thin liquids. He will continue to receive skilled therapy with the expectation for him to continue to improve towards a higher level of functional independence!
