Details of Experience:
After four months of being ventilator dependent in the Critical Care Unit, I was transferred to Ramapo Manor Rehabilitation Center for follow up care. I was placed on a bi-Level breathing machine at night with high flow oxygen. I was placed on 50-70% oxygen during the day and a breathing mask to assist with my respiratory failure at night. I began to slowly return to walking and reducing my oxygen flow with exercise. With any exertion my oxygen saturations would drop drastically, and I would need to be monitored closely for increasing my levels. I began to sleep better at night with the bipap and would maintain improved levels of oxygen in my blood. I was taught how to control my various devices and maintain proper mask fitting independently. The respiratory and physical therapists helped to educate my nurse aides for round the clock care once I returned home. I improved my sleep patterns with the use of a new high tech machine called a trilogy at night. I showed mass improvement with this new ventilator and was assisted with use of humidified air.
Once a discharge home date was set, I was given a home exercise program to maintain my walking and exercise stamina. My home assistants were trained in use of all equipment and the home care company would make weekly visits to maintain equipment. I am so grateful to the amazing pulmonary rehab team all the nurses and the whole staff at Ramapo Manor and can’t thank them enough for my ability to return home safely.
