Details of Experience:

Mr. Tomlin is a 68-year-old male who presented to Bethany Center after a three night stay at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Henry was admitted to VUMC after increasing concerns of infection in his right left extremity from a recent right below the knee amputation and found to have tissue necrosis, osteomyelitis and poor wound healing.

Back in October, Mr. Tomlin sustained deep thickness burns to the plantar surface of the soles of bilateral feet and noticed that the bottoms of both feet began turning black/necrotic along with drainage, thus his need to be admitted to the hospital. He then underwent surgery and had skin grafts taken from his right thigh area to aid in the healing of the burns to both feet.

Upon discharging from Bethany, the wounds on both feet were healing and after visits to his vascular surgeon, amputation was not in his future; however, after having been gone from Bethany awhile, Mr. Tomlin ended up with some complications that led him back to the hospital. Unfortunately, this trip resulted in him having his right lower extremity amputation below the knee and was sent to a different nursing facility following the surgery. It was at this facility that Mr. Tomlin began to notice the changes/issues with the wound following the amputation and this is what led him back to VUMC for treatment and different skilled nursing facility placement.

Arriving back at Bethany, Henry felt depressed about his current situation. During the first week or so he barely had an appetite and other than therapy, he was sleeping most of the time. Medication for depression was prescribed after he was referred to psychology and the GNP discussed the option with Mr. Tomlin and it was agreed upon. The addition of an antidepressant helped in a big way and both Henry’s mood and appetite improved and he began to make progress in therapy as well. Mr. Tomlin was seen by Todd and Dennis again and is hoping to have his prosthesis by the end of February. Henry is currently still at Bethany working to strengthen his upper body as well as his left lower extremity to aid in learning how to use his prosthesis soon. He is looking forward to being able to walk and be functional very soon!
