Details of Experience:
Mrs. Mitchell is an 86-year-old female who was admitted to Bethany Center on April 19th, 2018, after sustaining a fall at home that resulted in a fracture of her left femur. After her fall, she was taken to Saint Thomas Midtown’s emergency department where X-Rays revealed the fracture of her left femur. She underwent surgery to repair the fracture shortly after admission to the hospital. According to her daughter, her Mother was quite functional physically, but her dementia is rather advanced. She admitted to Bethany with the goal of being able to return back home with her daughter at her prior level of function.
Upon admission, Mrs. Mitchell was evaluated by our therapy department to determine her plan of care complete with both long and short-term goals. Being that her cognition wasn’t at 100%, the therapy team had to take that into consideration when planning and executing her therapy goals.
During her stay, Mrs. Mitchell became stronger and, even with her immobilizer, she began to be able to ambulate with assistance and a rolling walker. Since her daughter would be her mother’s primary caregiver upon discharge, she worked with staff closely to learn how to assist in the safest way for both herself and her mother. Mrs. Mitchell’s daughter was able to demonstrate all necessary care needs for her mother and performed them along with Mrs. Mitchell at her highest functional ability thus far in her stay.
Currently our therapy team, along with Mrs. Mitchell’s daughter, are working together to hopefully be able to reach the goal of her being able to discharge home at her prior level of function.
Mrs. Mitchell has been cheerful and upbeat throughout her stay and the staff are hopeful that she is able to return home with her daughter.
