Details of Experience:
Anna is an 87-year-old female who was admitted to The Hamlet Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center at Nesconset on June 6, 2019, after her stay at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital for atherosclerotic heart disease, pneumonia, osteoarthritis, muscle weakness, essential hypertension, and anxiety disorder.

Anna is an independent lady who enjoys playing Rummy Q with friends, watching game shows on television, listening to ballets and visiting local senior centers. Anna shared that she recently began painting there and was surprised that she possessed such talent. Anna’s goal entering The Hamlet was to increase her strength and balance in order to “get up and walk out of here, the way she came in, with a walker.”

Anna was welcomed to The Hamlet, and within 12 hours was greeted by her nurses, aides, and highly trained therapists. Upon evaluation, it was determined that Anna required skilled physical therapy and occupational therapy six days a week practicing dynamic functional abilities, bed mobility tasks, safely ambulating on level surfaces and ascending/descending 4 steps and required maximum assistance with all activities of daily living. Upon Anna’s admission, she was unable to climb any steps and only able to ambulate 5 feet.

Although it took some time, Anna was making consistent progress towards her short term and long term goals. In less than two weeks, Anna was able to ambulate 40 feet. At the time of her discharge, Anna is now able to ambulate 125 feet with stand by assistance and walk up and down 4 steps with minimum assistance.

Since learning of Anna’s artistic abilities, Anna attended our pizza and paint night. She shared that her daughter would also have to hang her artwork from The Hamlet which she thoroughly enjoyed creating. Team Hamlet is inspired by Anna’s motivation to never give up. We wish her continued success in the future.
