Details of experience:
Mr. Kenneth W. arrived at The Chateau on April 5, 2019. Due to the fact that he was a diabetic and also presented with gangrene, he required extensive rehabilitation to gain and build strength. He was scheduled to return to Maimonides Medical Center for a left foot amputation from the knee down. On January 16, 2019, Kenneth was transferred to the hospital to have his left foot amputated.

After the procedure, it was time for Kenneth to return to The Chateau for some much-needed rehab in order for him to learn how to walk again. As soon as Kenneth arrived at The Chateau, he was happy to be placed on the first floor, where he was a resident before the procedure was done. He remembered all the nurses and CNAs on the floor and they were all very happy to welcome him back. When asked about his stay, Kenneth stated “The Chateau is a wonderful place. Ms. Young, my nurse on the 7-3 shift is really amazing, she has a magical touch. When I came in from the hospital, I had some issues that I needed to be taken care of, and within one hour of being here, Ms. Young resolved them.”

After an amazing night’s sleep, Kenneth was greeted by his two favorite therapists, Mr. Melvin from the PT department and Miss. Nagwa, from the OT department. After vigorously working with them together with the world-renowned Dennis Oehler and Todd Schaffhauser from our Amputee Walking School, he was fitted for a prosthetic. He was able to use them on his own and was able to keep up with his activities of daily living. Although all good times must end this was a bittersweet moment when the social worker shared a discharge date with Kenneth, which was a big accomplishment on his part together with his therapist and family members.

It was a beautiful Wednesday morning and Mr. Kenneth was up early, excited but also sad that he was leaving us. The staff was so happy and proud of all that he accomplished over this long five-month stay. The staff at The Chateau at Brooklyn wish Kenneth much success in all that he does in the future, and encourages him to continue pushing and being the best he can be.
