Carole S. was all dressed up and ready for her weekly night out to the Casino with her partner. Unfortunately, she did not predict the events and how her night would actually go. Carole attempted to exit the car, her leg buckled when attempting to meet her mobilized device and she fell to the floor. The emergency team at the Casino insisted on calling 911, but Carole felt sore and just wanted to get home. She got back into her car, but was in pain and agony and instructed her partner to drive her to the emergency room. Carole was admitted to Boca West Medical Center with a fractured tibia and fractured fibula.

Prior to her fall outside the Casino, on September 4th, Carole underwent an operation to revise a double knee surgery that she had previously gone through back in 2006. Carole was enrolled in therapy at home and was enjoying some levels of normalcy after her fall and procedure. She never experienced any sort of knee-buckling prior to her fall. Her fractures were devastating to her. Carole was told by her doctors in the hospital that she would need rehabilitation to lead her to full recovery. Carole’s roommate in the hospital recommended The Encore. Carole searched The Encore online and was satisfied with the reviews and photos that she saw.

Carole was admitted to The Encore on November 24, 2019. The Encore appeared to be very beautiful. Carole was happy to be greeted by Hollie, the Social Worker, who was very caring and wanted to see Carole happy. Norma from the Rehabilitation Department arrived to evaluate Carole for therapy so she would be able to begin her therapy journey right away. Carole was unable to transfer or move around in her bed at all on her own and felt very helpless. A highlight for Carole was when one of the therapists, JR, completely shifted her thought process and helped reduce her pain. Carole shared, “I was in excruciating pain in my leg. JR told me to think of something else. He explained to me that my brain does not know that my leg is broken. I thought of something entirely irrelevant to my pain and was able to transfer. This process of thinking will help me forever.”

Upon admission, Carole shared similar goals to her therapists, Jillian, and Robinson. She wanted to be able to get up and walk again with a walker. She wanted to return to her independence. Carole required maximum assistance with transferring and bed mobility. Her therapist shared

that she was a good learner, very motivated, and made progress quickly. She became independent with bed mobility and was able to transfer on her own with stand by assistance. Her weight-bearing status changed and she was now able to walk with a walker. She has been extremely determined and never gives up. Carole is now able to walk 60 feet, times 4, with her walker. Carole will have home health and return for outpatient therapy services to continue working toward new goals and independence. Carole shared that her therapists were very knowledgeable. They pushed her and did not allow her to be lazy at all, which she appreciated. “My two therapists have gone above and beyond for me. They knew that I tried to be as independent as possible. They were worried about me on a personal level.”

Carole loved celebrating her birthday at the Encore. Carole had a group of close friends come to the Encore for her special day. They sat under the gazebo all day and played games. Carole’s friends brought lunch and cake to enhance the celebration. Later that evening, Carole went back out to the gazebo to celebrate with her partner who brought Italian food and more cake. She enjoyed the day very much. Carole made friends with her roommates at The Encore and had a pleasant experience with them. “Marsha, the nurse, and Emma, the nurse aid, were especially helpful to me during my stay. They made me feel comfortable and always went the extra mile for my care.”

Carole was excited to walk out of The Encore and go home. She could not wait to return to her nights out at the Casino and to an enjoyable restaurant. Carole shared, “The Encore is one of the top places in South Florida. Having been to other facilities, I can say that this place is far superior to places known as the top. There were staff members who made this place more than special!”
