How did this patient hear about Quality Center for Rehabilitation and Healing? The Patient’s Case Worker

Details of Experience:
Ms. S. stated “I don’t really remember the few days prior to my hospital stay. All I remember is being a little confused and not feeling like myself”. She was taken to the hospital to help and they discovered her slightly fractured wrist and cerebral infarction due to thrombosis of right posterior cerebral artery

After a four-night stay at the hospital, Ms. S. was admitted to Bethany Center for Rehabilitation and Healing. Upon admission, she was greeted by the admission nurse, the concierge, and her CNA for the day. The remainder of the interdisciplinary team began evaluations and created a personalized treatment plan for Ms. S. She was reserved and became more comfortable due to her warm welcome.

Her Physical and Occupational Therapists’ main focus was her balance, gait, her left wrist and getting her home safely. Ms. S. could ambulate short distances upon admission but leaned to the left due to her wrist not being stable or strong. Ms. S had a lot of ambition when it came to getting better and stronger. She pushed through her therapy every single day.

With her balance, she started out with leg raises. At the beginning, the longest she could hold it was for 5 seconds along with the assist of holding onto a railing or table. Therapy’s goal for her is to be able to hold it longer and without holding onto anything if she didn’t have to. Prior to falling, Ms. S was very independent and lived in an independent living facility and she wanted to get back there.

Range of motion played a big part in her rehab for her left wrist. She could still move it but as the therapist was working with her, they could tell she was protecting it a little more than she should be. She started out doing a circular motion with her wrist in one direction and then in the other direction. Light weights were added and stretchy therabands were used as well. Two weeks after working on her wrist Ms. S was able to bear weight on it without a problem. She also no longer leaned to the left when ambulating with her walker.

Three weeks after starting therapy she was able to do her leg raises and hold it on each side for over 20 seconds. Occasionally she still needed the assistance of holding onto her table or railing, but all in all she met therapy goals. She is now ambulating with her walker with no problem and says “I’m better than ever!!”

Ms. S has succeeded so much in therapy and is now moving onto restorative therapy-which is another type of therapy to keep her up and active! After each therapy session, the concierge brings her a Coke to drink as a “reward” (as she calls it) and to keep that wonderful smile on her face.

We are wishing her the best as she discharges back home to her independent living facility.
